The process can be done without brain devices or surgery. This new idea is a big step forward for people who can't speak anymore, like those who have had a stroke or are disabled. Putting thoughts into words

The study team, led by PhD student Charles (Jinzhao) Zhou and with help from Professors Chin-Teng Lin and Dr. Yanan Leong, made a smart AI tool that can read brain waves and write them down. In a real test, Dr. Leong wore a unique hat that had 128 sensors on it. She didn't say anything. It did, however, print this warning on a nearby screen:

"I am jumpy and happy; it's just me."

She didn't talk, write, or move her hands. It only had to read her brain waves and turn them into words right away. A lot of the people who watched thought they saw the future.

How does it work?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) scan is used by the machine. Electricity from the head is picked up by this scan. The brain patterns are sent to a smart learning model, which figures out what they mean to understand what the person is saying. An EEG lets you hear a lot of "noise" coming from various brain areas. It's up to the AI to sort through those signs and figure out what they mean.

It's not easy to get clear signals without surgery," Prof. Lin said. The AI learns to tell the difference between brain rhythms that are important and those that are just noise in the background. Right now, these are the only words the AI can understand. This makes it easy to train and better at what it does. The group plans to add more words in the future.

There was no cut or needle, just a hat.

Brain gadgets that go inside the head are being worked on by other companies, such as Elon Musk's Neuralink. They might send better messages, but surgery is pricey and hard to get to. For the UTS system, a cap with sensors, like a swim cap with wires, is all that is needed. This helps keep it safe and simple to use.

Dr. Lin said, "We're not as accurate as brain implants, but we're safer, easier, and more useful in the real world."

How does the issue look?

Even with all this work, there are still some big issues that need to be fixed:

At the moment, the machine can only understand a few words. To get full words to work, it will take time and more data.

People are different because their brains receive messages in different ways. To get the best results, each person needs to learn the system on their own. There are privacy worries about who is in charge of managing the data in your brain. How can we stop abuse?

It's still not clear how to answer these important questions. One thing is for sure, though: this tool isn't meant to spy on people; it's meant to help them talk again.

"We don't want to be able to read minds," Zhou said. "To help people who have lost their voice."

What's Next?

In the next 5 to 10 years, they think that early models of this system could be used in rehab centers and hospitals. Brain-to-text gadgets may soon be available to everyone as the technology gets better and cheaper.
