Google Maps Could Soon Order Your Food. AI Is Learning to Do More Than Just Give Directions

Google Maps may soon become much more than a navigation app. New findings from an app teardown suggest Google is developing an AI-powered feature that would allow users to describe what they're craving, while Gemini searches for a restaurant, selects suitable options, and prepares the order, all from within Maps. Although the feature hasn't been officially launched, it signals Google's broader push toward "agentic AI" that can perform tasks, not just answer questions.

"The next generation of AI won't just tell you where to go , it may handle the task before you get there."

From Navigation to Action

For years, Google Maps has helped users discover restaurants, compare reviews, and find the fastest route. Now, it appears Google wants the app to take the next step by completing actions on a user's behalf.

Code discovered in the latest Android version points to an upcoming feature that lets users simply describe what they want to eat. Gemini AI would then locate a suitable restaurant, prepare the order, and guide users through the final checkout process. The feature is still under development and has not been officially announced.

The Rise of Agentic AI

Unlike traditional AI assistants that provide suggestions, agentic AI is designed to perform real-world tasks with minimal user input. Instead of opening multiple apps, browsing menus, and placing an order manually, users may only need to make a simple request in natural language.

Google has been steadily integrating Gemini across its ecosystem, making Maps one of the latest apps expected to gain more autonomous capabilities.

Convenience Comes With Questions

If introduced, the feature could change how people interact with Maps, but it also raises important questions around privacy, payment security, and user control.

Reports indicate users would still approve payments before an order is completed, ensuring that AI assists with the process rather than making purchases entirely on its own.

A Bigger Shift in Consumer Technology

Google Maps ordering food is about more than restaurants. It reflects a broader shift in AI, where digital assistants are evolving into software that can complete everyday tasks across multiple services.

As companies race to build smarter AI agents, the future of mobile apps may be less about tapping screens and more about simply asking for what you need.

The Bigger Picture

The next wave of artificial intelligence is moving beyond conversations. Instead of answering questions, AI is beginning to book appointments, manage schedules, compare options, and potentially complete purchases by changing how people interact with technology in everyday life.

The Bottom Line

Google Maps has already changed how people travel. Soon, it may also change how they order food. While the feature remains under development, it offers a glimpse into a future where AI doesn't just assist users rather it helps get things done.
