What Was Behind the Boom?

This big rise in digital transactions didn’t happen by chance. Years of digital efforts, supported by government plans and collaboration between the public and private sectors, made it possible.

According to a report by the IMF, India’s success comes from a special “model of digital public infrastructure.

This model mixes open access with strong control. Projects like Aadhaar, Jan Dhan Yojana, and Digital India helped build this foundation.

By connecting 675 banks and making it easy for them to work together, UPI offers something most other countries haven’t achieved: a fully unified payment system that is simple, quick, and free to use. India is not just celebrating its achievements at home. The UPI system is now working in seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Mauritius, and France. This move into Europe shows India is reaching out globally.

As BBC News reported, France has become the first European nation to accept UPI payments. This means Indian tourists and residents can now make real-time payments using their Indian bank accounts while in France.

On the positive side, the model India has developed is now being looked at by other countries. Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia are exploring similar systems inspired by India's success.
