FazTimes Media, Caracas, October 26, 2025 — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused the United States of orchestrating a campaign to provoke conflict against his government after Washington deployed one of its most powerful warships near Venezuelan waters. The development marks a serious escalation in already strained relations between Caracas and Washington, reviving fears of renewed instability in Latin America.

U.S. Deployment Sparks Anger in Caracas

According to U.S. military sources, the deployment is part of a wider “anti-narcotics operation,” but Venezuelan officials allege it is a cover for a planned intervention. The USS Gerald R. Ford can host nearly 90 combat aircraft and helicopters, making it one of the most formidable symbols of American power projection.

Maduro dismissed Washington’s claim that the operation targets drug trafficking networks, describing it as “an imperial show of force aimed at destabilizing the Bolivarian Republic.” He accused the Trump administration of creating “an extravagant and criminal narrative” that links Venezuela to organized crime groups.

“They are fabricating an extravagant narrative, a vulgar, criminal, and totally fake one,” Maduro said.

“Venezuela is a country that does not produce coca leaves.”

His remarks followed Trump’s accusation—made without evidence—that Maduro leads the Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal syndicate blamed for violence and human trafficking across Latin America.

Venezuela Responds With Military Exercises

In response to the U.S. deployment, Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López announced a series of coastal defense drills across nine states. The exercises, he said, are designed to “protect the nation against covert operations, terrorism, and any military aggression.”

State television aired footage of Venezuelan troops stationed along the Caribbean coast and members of Maduro’s civilian militia training with Russian-made Igla-S anti-aircraft missiles. Padrino warned that the CIA could already be active in the country.

Since August, U.S. forces have deployed eight Navy vessels, ten F-35 warplanes, and a nuclear-powered submarine for operations said to target drug smuggling routes. Caracas insists that these movements are part of a broader plan to overthrow the Venezuelan government, echoing historical U.S. interventions in Latin America.

Washington Targets Maduro and His Allies

The latest military activity follows a series of economic and political measures by Washington against the Venezuelan leadership. The U.S. has long refused to recognize Maduro’s presidency, alleging electoral fraud in the 2024 election, which international observers from several nations deemed “deeply flawed.”

In addition to Venezuela, the Trump administration has also sanctioned officials in Colombia, including President Gustavo Petro, his family, and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti. The U.S. Treasury Department accused Petro of “failing to dismantle” Colombia’s cocaine production networks and of protecting armed criminal groups under his “Total Peace’ initiative.

Petro fired back on social media, calling the sanctions “a political attack wrapped in moral justification.” He alleged that Republican senators, including Bernie Moreno, had long threatened to undermine his presidency for its leftist stance.

A Deepening Regional Divide

The U.S. strategy has divided Latin American governments. Some right-leaning nations, such as Ecuador and Paraguay, have voiced support for Washington’s anti-drug campaign. Others, including Bolivia and Nicaragua, have condemned what they describe as “imperialist aggression” against sovereign states.

In Caracas, Maduro’s supporters view the escalation as part of a broader plan to suppress socialist movements in Latin America.

Political analyst Rafael Uzcátegui told Media that the U.S. is “testing Venezuela’s response capacity” before deciding whether to escalate further.

“This is not about drugs,” Uzcátegui said. “It’s about sending a message that Washington is willing to confront left-wing governments again, just as it did during the Cold War.”

Opposition Leader Stripped of Citizenship

Amid the growing crisis, Maduro announced he had initiated legal proceedings to revoke the citizenship of Leopoldo López, one of the country’s most prominent opposition figures. López, who has lived in exile in Spain since 2020, openly supports U.S. intervention and has praised attacks on suspected drug-trafficking vessels.

Maduro accused López of “inciting foreign invasion” and “conspiring with imperial powers.” However, López responded on the social media platform X, saying the move was unconstitutional.

López previously spent more than three years in a military prison for his role in organizing anti-government protests in 2014 and was later placed under house arrest before fleeing abroad.

A Region on Edge

Since early September, U.S. airstrikes targeting alleged drug boats in the Caribbean have killed at least 43 people, according to regional media reports. Human rights organizations have expressed concern over the lack of transparency surrounding these operations.

Public opinion in Venezuela remains sharply divided. Some citizens view the U.S. deployment as a threat to national sovereignty, while others hope that external pressure could end years of economic hardship under Maduro’s rule.

Economist Mariana Pérez told Media that “sanctions and military intimidation only deepen Venezuela’s crisis” and that “dialogue, not deterrence,” should be the path forward.

Final Thoughts

Whether this standoff leads to diplomacy or disaster may depend on how far both sides are willing to go—and whether Latin America can resist becoming the next arena of great-power confrontation.
