Need a Robot? In China, You Can Now Rent One Like a Car

Humanoid robots are no longer confined to research labs or factory floors. In China, a growing number of companies are offering robots for rent, allowing businesses, event organisers, and even individuals to hire AI-powered machines for short-term use. The trend reflects China's rapid push into robotics, where lowering costs and expanding access could bring humanoid robots into everyday life sooner than many expected.

"The future of robotics may not begin with ownership , it may begin with a rental."

Robots Are Becoming a Service

Instead of spending tens of thousands of dollars to buy a humanoid robot, customers can now rent one for exhibitions, product launches, educational events, hospitality, and marketing campaigns. Rental services are making advanced robotics accessible to businesses that want to experiment without making a major investment.

China's Robotics Race Is Accelerating

China has made robotics and "embodied AI" a national priority as it prepares for an ageing population and future labour shortages. Companies are rapidly developing smarter humanoid robots capable of interacting with people, performing physical tasks, and learning through artificial intelligence. The country's manufacturing ecosystem is also helping reduce production costs and speed up innovation.

More Than a Tech Showcase

Today's rental robots can greet visitors, answer questions, entertain audiences, and assist with customer engagement. While they are not yet ready to replace human workers in most environments, they are increasingly being used to support businesses and showcase emerging AI capabilities.

As technology improves, experts expect rental models to help familiarise both companies and consumers with everyday human-robot interaction.

The Bigger Picture

The shift from selling robots to renting them mirrors the evolution of many modern technologies. Just as cloud computing made powerful software accessible without expensive infrastructure, robot rentals could make advanced automation available to organisations of all sizes.

If costs continue to fall and AI capabilities improve, hiring a robot for work, customer service, or events could become as routine as renting audiovisual equipment today.

The Bottom Line

China's robot rental market offers a glimpse of how artificial intelligence may enter everyday life—not through ownership, but through easy access. What seems like a novelty today could soon become a practical business service used around the world.
