FazTimes Media: The ceasefire in Gaza has stopped the constant sounds of war, but for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, peace has brought new challenges—ones that can't be solved with bombs or military force. After almost two years of a catastrophic war that killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and destroyed much of Gaza, Netanyahu now faces big political, legal, and diplomatic problems that could hurt his leadership and even his freedom. Critics say that even though the fighting has stopped, the political issues around Israel's longest-serving leader are getting worse.

Al Jazeera reports that Netanyahu's opponents accuse him of keeping the war going to take attention away from his corruption trials and his falling popularity. Now, with a ceasefire in place—pushed by an impatient White House—Netanyahu's problems seem to be growing even more.

Let’s take a closer look at the six major challenges facing Israel’s prime minister as the situation in Gaza settles down.

Israel’s Increasing International Isolation

The level of worldwide criticism Israel is now facing is surprisingly high. Pictures of the destruction in Gaza have shown whole neighborhoods turned into ruins, hospitals overwhelmed, and thousands of children killed. All people are upset around the world.

BBC News says more than 67,000 Palestinians have died in the conflict, and famine and displacement continue to affect survivors. This growing anger situation has put Israel in its most isolated position in decades, with Netanyahu himself becoming the symbol of that isolation.

Several Western countries are now rethinking their arms sales to Israel, and protests have broken out in big cities around the world. The strong support Israel once had from many of its traditional allies is starting to weaken.

Israel's economy is also feeling the impact. The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange has had many drops, the shekel has lost value, and foreign investors are becoming more cautious because of the political instability. Business leaders in Israel have openly criticized Netanyahu's vision of making the country into a “Super Sparta”—a term he used to describe a strong, independent military nation. The response from the Israeli business community was clear: “We are not Sparta.”

Cracks Within Netanyahu’s Right-Wing Coalition

Netanyahu's ability to stay in power has always relied on his shaky alliance with far-right and ultra-Orthodox groups. During the war, his top supporters—like Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir—wanted to destroy Hamas and take full control of Gaza.

Now that they have agreed upon a ceasefire, these same allies are beginning to retreat. Ben-Gvir has already accused Netanyahu of betraying the right by agreeing to stop the fighting.

Feeling the pressure, Netanyahu is trying a new plan: winning back the support of the ultra-Orthodox community. There are reports that he wants to pass a law that would let religious students avoid military service. He is making this move to regain the support of those parties.

But this balance might not last a moment. If his far-right partners leave, Netanyahu’s government could fall apart, leading to early elections, and it will impact the end of his political career.

The Threat of International Justice

Netanyahu is facing serious legal risks on the world stage. In late 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over possible war crimes in Gaza.

At the same time, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is still looking into genocide claims against Israel, and many legal experts believe that if the court finds Israel responsible, Netanyahu could be directly blamed.

Al Jazeera reports that the resolution of these legal cases may take years, but their impact on politics is already significant. Even if he avoids arrest, Netanyahu's international reputation has suffered significantly. Fewer world leaders are visiting Israel, and many are moving away from the country.

If found guilty, the ICC could sentence Netanyahu to 30 years in prison. Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council might receive a ruling from the ICJ against Israel, further straining an already fragile government.

A Fractured Relationship With Donald Trump

For a long time, Netanyahu had strong support from the U.S., especially from Donald Trump, who used to be the president and had close ties with Israel.

The tension between them started years ago. In 2021, Trump was really angry when Netanyahu quickly welcomed Joe Biden as the new president. That feeling of betrayal seems to have stayed with him.

Recently, Trump was upset about Israel bombing Hamas diplomats in Doha, which he thought stopped peace talks. He said, “He’s screwing me,” referring to Netanyahu.

As one of Israel’s most important allies, the U.S.—and Trump himself—plays a big role in Israel’s political future. If Trump feels betrayed, Netanyahu might lose the strong American support that has helped him on the world stage.

Demands for Accountability Over the October 7 Attack

In the country of Israel, people are still very angry about the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas that killed more than 1,100 Israelis and took around 250 hostages to Gaza.

Separate investigations by Israel’s army and intelligence services have found major problems with communication and preparedness. Both the army chief and the intelligence director left their posts after the investigations.

Netanyahu, however, has refused to let there be any investigation into how his government handled the situation, calling it “politically motivated.” That position is no longer acceptable. After the ceasefire, Israel’s High Court said there's no reason to delay an inquiry into Netanyahu's role, giving the government 30 days to respond.

The results of this inquiry could have big consequences. If it finds that Netanyahu ignored warnings or messed up intelligence, public trust could fall apart—even among his supporters.

The Looming Threat of Jail

Maybe Netanyahu’s biggest personal fear isn’t losing power but going to jail. He has been involved in three corruption cases since 2020, accused of taking bribes, lying, and breaking trust.

Even though there have been delays because of the war, the trials have still gone on. The prosecutors say Netanyahu got gifts like fancy cigars and expensive champagne from rich businesspeople in return for helping them with politics.

BBC News reported that even Trump made a joke about the cases, telling Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon Netanyahu for “a few cigars and champagne.” But the real story is serious. If found guilty, Netanyahu could spend up to 10 years in prison.

People watching the situation say that the timing of the Gaza war and the recent ceasefire has matched decisive moments in his legal cases. Some believe he exploited the war to evade detection.

The Road Ahead

Benjamin Netanyahu has always been called a “political survivor.” For many years, he has dealt with scandals, public anger, and military problems, yet he has stayed in power. But this time feels different.

Now that the fighting in Gaza has stopped, everyone is focusing on him. His allies are doubting him, international courts are closely scrutinizing him, and Israelis are demanding accountability.

As one analyst told Al Jazeera, “For Netanyahu, peace is proving more dangerous than war.”

The next few months will show whether Israel’s longest-serving leader can avoid trouble again—or if the ceasefire means the end of his political career.
