A study that was just released in Nature Ecology and Evolution and was led by scientists at the University of Reading paints a very bad picture. More than three times as many bird species could be lost in the next 100 years as in the last 500 years put together if things keep going the way they are. Those who drive? A dangerous mix of climate change, environmental loss, and activities that people can't sustain. It's not just about birds; it's about people, too.

Why the loss of birds should worry you

Birds are important signs of a healthy world. Their appearance (or lack of presence) tells us about the health of the ecosystem around us. Just think of a regular sparrow or bulbul. In Indian towns, they used to be very common, but in recent decades, their numbers have dropped. A lot of birds in India are in danger.

There are more than 1,300 different kinds of birds that live in India. Some of the most famous are the Indian peafowl, the sarus crane, and the hornbill. What the Study Is Based On

The experts looked at information from the IUCN Red List about almost 10,000 different bird species. They looked at dangers like

Habitat loss from cutting down trees and changing the use of land
Hunting and taking game
Changes in the climate are changing how people move and breed.
Use of pesticides and pollution
Introduced species that are harmful to humans

Their research shows that about 250 species would still be in danger of going extinct even if we stopped all harmful actions right now. That's because some species are already so in danger that they need recovery plans right away, as well as security.

What Still Needs To Be Done

We can do something, and it's not too late.

The experts suggest two ways to deal with the problem:

Keep current habitats safe and cut down on direct threats from people, like hunting, pollution, and using land in ways that aren't sustainable.
Make special recovery plans for the birds that are in the most danger, such as raising them in captivity, releasing them back into the wild, and restoring their habitats.

We could protect up to 68% of the world's bird shape and size variety if we only worked to protect the 100 most endangered and evolutionarily unique bird species. This is important for keeping ecosystems healthy.

This is very important because different birds play different roles in the environment. Some animals, like ravens and hornbills, are very important to nature and can't be replaced. Keeping them alive saves whole food chains.

When we hear about how many species are going extinct, it's easy to feel powerless. But real change often starts close to home, in yards, schools, farms, and neighborhoods.

People and groups in the area can do the following:

Birds will need food and a place to stay if you plant natural trees.
Chemical fertilizers and pesticides that kill birds and insects should not be used.
During the summer, keep water bowls outside.
Don't dump trash in lakes and ponds; instead, protect marshes.
Help groups like the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) or neighborhood bird-watching clubs by giving money or time.

Birds are an important part of Indian culture and religion. Birds are in our songs, rites, and stories, like Saraswati's swan and Krishna's peacock. Not only would losing them be bad for the environment, but it would also be bad for culture.

Ravi Menon is a teacher from Kerala who loves birds. He says that his children see fewer birds now than they did even ten years ago.
