News from fazTimes media: A lot of us pick up habits in the bathroom that we don't talk about very often. One of the most common of these is going to the bathroom in the shower. Professionals in health warn that this common habit could have negative impacts on your face and overall health, even if it seems harmless and even clean.

The Reflex of the Habit

It's normal to have to go to the bathroom while standing under a stream of warm water. This urge is associated with a physiological process known as immersion diuresis. Researchers in medicine say that when the body is bathed in warm water, the nervous system raises blood pressure. Pushing the kidneys to clear more fluid causes the bladder to fill up faster. This is something that many people do, especially after a long shower. Although the act seems simple, it still carries potential risks.

The View from Science

A study released in 2014 in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology says that urine is not as germ-free as was once thought. Even though urine is mostly water, it does contain small amounts of germs, urea, ammonia, and uric acid. If you pee on these things, they can irritate, dry out, and even give you rashes, especially if you do it in a warm, humid place like a shower.

"Urinating in the shower may make symptoms worse for people with sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema," says Dr. Neha Mehta, a dermatologist in Mumbai. Long-term exposure to urea and ammonia on the skin can alter its normal pH balance.

Having worries about hygiene

Moving water might wash everything away immediately, but that's not always the case. If you don't clean bathroom floors properly or frequently, urine germs can grow on them. Not just you, but everyone else using the bathroom is in danger in this situation. Skin diseases are more likely to happen if bacteria grow in the shower's corners and tile grout over time.

According to BBC News, health experts have also said that urinating a lot in the shower can lead to bad hygiene habits. Dr. Ramesh Sharma, a microbiology expert, asserts, "It doesn't necessarily mean it's gone forever."

Women are more likely to die.

The habit may be even worse for women's health. Men can urinate while standing, while women are unable to do so due to the structure of their bodies. Such behavior can put stress on the pelvic floor muscles, which are important for controlling your bladder. The strain can weaken the pelvic support over time, making it harder for women to control their urination, especially as they get older or after giving birth.

Gynecologist Dr. Ananya Rao in Bengaluru says, "It can make a condition called urinary incontinence worse." "Women who frequently urinate in the shower may unintentionally teach their brains to associate water sounds with the urge to urinate, even when their bladder isn't full." This kind of neurological retraining can mess up natural cues for urination, which can lead to overactive bladder syndrome, in which people feel like they need to go to the bathroom more often.

Risk of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Another problem is that you are more likely to get urinary tract infections (UTIs). If you pee in a hazardous position, your bladder might not empty. Bacteria thrive on leftover urine, increasing the likelihood of illness. Because women's urethras are shorter, they are more likely to get UTIs.

Al Jazeera Health Desk says that having bad urination habits over and over again can mess up the body's normal processes and lead to long-term illnesses.

Getting Out of the Habit

If you often go to the bathroom in the shower, you might want to change your mind. Even though it might be easy, you should think about the health risks. What's good to hear? It's possible to break this harmful habit.

Here are some suggestions backed by experts:

Make it a habit to go to the bathroom before you shower to empty your stomach.
Train your brain: Take the sound or feel of water away from peeing. If you need to, go outside and use the bathroom.
Workouts for the Pelvic Floor: This exercise is especially important for women because it can help avoid incontinence.
Keep the bathroom clean. If you share a bathroom, make sure to clean the floors often.

Myths about society and how people see it

It's crazy how many people think that peeing in the shower is better for the environment because it saves a flush. This point might have some truth to it when it comes to saving water, but for many people, the health risks are greater than the environmental benefits.

An online poll from 2022 by a hygiene product business found that 61% of people admitted to urinating in the shower, mostly for convenience's sake. More than 45% of people who answered the same poll said they didn't know that the habit could be bad for their health.

Finally, some words

You might think that going to the bathroom in the shower is a safe habit because it saves time. But new studies and professional views show that it can hurt the health of your skin, your hygiene, and even the way your urinary system works. Changing habits can be challenging, but it's beneficial for your health to do so.

When you need to go, it might be best to stop singing in the shower, go outside, and use the bathroom. It will be beneficial for your skin and stomach.
