While global smartphone manufacturing is projected to dip by 1% in 2025, India is bucking the trend with anticipated double-digit growth, potentially claiming 20% of global output, its highest share to date. The surge is being fueled by rising demand from major players like Apple and Samsung, both of whom are increasingly betting big on Indian soil.

India’s Growth Defies Global Decline

The forecast marks a pivotal moment for India’s ambitions to become a global tech manufacturing leader. China, India, and Vietnam together accounted for over 90% of all smartphones produced globally. Why Global Giants Are Betting on India

The strategic pivot by tech giants like Apple and Samsung is no coincidence. Apple, in particular, has rapidly expanded its manufacturing footprint in India, now assembling a significant portion of its iPhones locally through partners like Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron. The move is partly driven by necessity. With the US-China trade war, tariff hikes, and increasing pressure to de-risk supply chains, India has emerged as the go-to alternative. It offers a large domestic market, skilled labor, cost advantages, and, crucially, policy support.

Samsung, meanwhile, already operates the world’s largest smartphone factory in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and is further expanding its export-oriented manufacturing in India.

The rise in smartphone manufacturing is also expected to have a positive ripple effect on India’s economy, especially in terms of job creation, technology transfer, and export revenues. Industry experts estimate that the sector could create tens of thousands of new skilled jobs by 2025, ranging from engineers and technicians to quality assurance specialists and supply chain managers. Additionally, the upskilling of workers to meet global quality standards is expected to significantly boost India’s human capital.
