The cancellation happened because some top Indian cricket players refused to play against Pakistan, mainly because of the growing tension after the Pahalgam attack earlier this year. Everyone was expecting this Sunday's game at Edgbaston in Birmingham to be the biggest match of the tournament. But with key players like Shikhar Dhawan choosing not to take part, the organizers had no option but to cancel the match completely.

Boycott Causes Strong Emotional Response

The response was quick and strong. Some former Indian cricket players, who are part of the WCL’s India Legends team, said they felt proud of their country and were still dealing with the sadness from the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in April. On X (formerly Twitter), he said again, “I won’t play any games against the Pakistan team in the upcoming WCL League. I mentioned this previously, and my decision is influenced by the current political situation and the sentiments people hold following the Pahalgam incident. He stressed that the soldiers’ sacrifice shouldn’t be forgotten for the sake of sports. “Our soldiers gave their lives. We are with their families. This match is more than just cricket,” he wrote.

The WCL, which brings together cricketing legends from six countries, started its second edition on June 18, with the final match planned for August 2. The India Legends team is a strong group led by Yuvraj Singh, who won the 2011 World Cup, and includes experienced players like Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, and Varun Aaron.

At first, the organizers said the India-Pakistan match was meant to create “happy memories” for fans, especially since the two countries haven’t been playing cricket against each other because of political issues. They mentioned that this idea was inspired by recent sports events, like Pakistan’s hockey team visiting India and a friendly volleyball match between the two nations.

The organizers said, “We thought of having the India vs. Pakistan match at WCL to create some joyful moments for people worldwide. But maybe in doing so, we ended up hurting some people’s feelings and causing emotional reactions.”

In the same statement, the WCL management apologized publicly: “We sincerely apologize again for hurting people’s feelings and hope you all understand that our only goal was to bring a few happy moments to the fans.”
